Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a condition that erodes the macula, which is the central part of the retina. The first signs involve defective blood vessels on or beneath the retina. If left untreated, this can lead to blindness in later life. Our optometrists at Palmetto Eye in Rock Hill can help prevent and treat this condition with medication and lifestyle changes.

What is Macular Degeneration?

The macula is the part of the retina in the back of your eye that processes central vision. This area is responsible for reading, recognizing faces, and driving. It can be affected by degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, treatments for cancer, complications from vascular conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, and diseases that affect the optic nerve. If detected early, AMD can be treated with laser surgery to improve your vision.

At Palmetto Eye, we recommend comprehensive eye exams at least once per year to make sure you are keeping your eyes healthy. We are proud to provide the latest technology and eye care service for our patients. We also offer contact lens and eyewear services. Contact Palmetto Eye to schedule your comprehensive eye exam with one of our eye doctors to determine if you have AMD.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Changes in your vision begin at the back of your eye and often include changes to color sensitivity and dark adaptation. The changes will progress to tighter visual fields, a reduced ability to see peripheral objects, and reduced contrast sensitivity in ambient light. Other symptoms include short-sightedness, farsightedness, poor night vision, a blind spot on one side of your field of vision, glare, or halos around lights at night.

Treating Macular Degeneration

An eye doctor can treat macular degeneration with medication. There are two types of medication, oral medication, and injections. You may also consider improving your vision through a laser procedure. Some people use dietary supplements or vitamins, acupuncture, and massage to treat macular degeneration. Rehabilitation for those with AMD may include vision therapy and balance training. When you visit our eye care clinic and are diagnosed with macular degeneration, we will develop a personalized treatment plan designed to meet your individual needs.
