.

What Is Glaucoma?

At our optometry practice, we see a variety of ocular health conditions. One of the most common and most serious conditions that we treat is called glaucoma. This is the term that is used to describe a cluster of eye conditions that could damage the optic nerve. Without the optic nerves, people would be unable to see. While glaucoma is more common as people age, young people can get glaucoma as well. This is one of the leading causes of blindness in people who are over 60 years of age.

In some cases, patients with glaucoma will not have any warning that the condition is developing. Therefore, it is important for everyone to visit an eye doctor at least once per year. We check the pressure behind the eyes at this visit, ensuring that individuals do not have glaucoma. The hallmark sign of glaucoma is rising pressure behind the eyes, which leads to glaucoma and blindness. If glaucoma is recognized early, it can be treated.

When people develop glaucoma, a few symptoms might arise. While it is asymptomatic in the beginning, some patients notice headaches, eye pain, halos, patchy blind spots, and tunnel vision. These are all serious symptoms that must be treated immediately.

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma

We diagnose glaucoma by checking the eye pressure, examining the optic nerves, and performing a peripheral vision (side vision) test. Once the condition has been diagnosed, the next step is to treat it. The first line of defense is prescription eye drops. There are many different categories of glaucoma drops, and we work with each patient individually to find the most effective therapy.

If this does not work, more invasive treatment methods might be needed. Some of the most common examples include filtering surgery, laser therapy, and drainage tubes. The goal is to relieve the pressure behind the eyes to save the nerves and blood vessels. This is where a trained eye doctor is essential for people with glaucoma. With rapid treatment, blindness can be prevented.
